LUSAKA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and three others sustained serious injuries in a road accident on a main highway in southern Zambia, the police said on Wednesday.

Esther Mwaata-Katongo, Zambia Police Spokesperson confirmed the accident which occurred along the Great North Road near Mazabuka town and involved five motor vehicles.

She said the accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday after a driver of a truck lost control due to excessive speed and hit into another oncoming truck which hit into three other vehicles.

She said this caused the driver of one of the vehicles to lose control and overturned in the process.
