BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Fiji Islands at 11:49 p.m. Thursday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter was monitored at 18.45 degrees south latitude and 179.35 degrees east longitude.

The quake struck at a depth of about 640 km.
