PARIS, May 6 (Xinhua) -- France was not the target of Tuesday's attack on a container ship operated by French shipping company CMA CGM in the Strait of Hormuz, a French government spokesperson said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
"The CMA CGM vessel was not flying the French flag. It was a Maltese-flagged ship with a Filipino crew," French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon told reporters after the meeting.
"As things stand, France was therefore in no way the target," she said.
Bregeon said France had not participated in the U.S. operation related to the regional conflict and had maintained a consistent position since the beginning of the crisis.
She added that the attack on the CMA CGM vessel demonstrated that the situation of the strait "remains dangerous."
The CMA CGM container ship San Antonio was attacked on Tuesday while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the company said. Several crew members were injured and the vessel sustained damage, though the company did not disclose the number of casualties or provide details on the ship's condition. ■
