SAO PAULO, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paulo midfielder Lucas Moura underwent surgery on Monday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg, the Brazilian club said.
The 33-year-old former Brazil international suffered the injury late in Sao Paulo's 2-2 home draw with Bahia in Brazil's Serie A on Sunday.
"The procedure, carried out by the team led by Doctor Moises Cohen, was successful and the player is expected to be discharged from hospital on Tuesday, remaining at home to rest during the initial days of recovery before beginning physiotherapy at the club," read a Sao Paulo statement.
The club did not provide a timeframe for his recovery, but Brazilian media reported he was unlikely to return to the pitch this year.
Lucas has made 236 appearances across two stints for Sao Paulo, scoring 58 goals and providing 40 assists. He returned to the club that launched his career in 2023 following spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham. ■
