BAGHDAD, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Tuesday reiterated his government's opposition to any attack on oil fields and diplomatic missions, warning of the escalating conflict's impact on regional stability.
In a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, al-Sudani said the situation in the region is deteriorating due to the war initiated by the "occupying entity," warning of potential displacement, instability, and rising violence, according to a statement from his media office.
He highlighted Iraq's initiative to form a diplomatic coalition aimed at achieving an immediate end to the war, noting that Iraq has been directly affected by repeated attacks and violations of its airspace.
Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's full commitment to protecting all diplomatic missions on its territory.
The minister also commended the stance of several European countries that have declined to engage in the conflict, and called on them to repatriate their nationals among imprisoned militants affiliated with the Islamic State.
For her part, von der Leyen praised al-Sudani's commitment to constructive dialogue and welcomed Iraq's proposal for a diplomatic coalition, saying that further discussions would follow.
Drone attacks on Tuesday evening targeted the U.S. embassy in Baghdad and the Victoria military base near the Baghdad International Airport, with no immediate report on casualties, an Iraqi Interior Ministry source said. ■
